Description

Belvedere Terrace, located on South Road, is a group of six early 19th-century houses, each two storeys high with a basement. They feature three windows each and are accessed from the return elevation. The buildings are constructed of ashlar stone, with a rusticated basement, a band above it, and another band over the ground floor that has 'Belvedere Terrace' engraved on No 1. There is a cill course on the first floor and a moulded cornice at the eaves. The hip-ended slate roof has raised verges and ashlar chimneys. The three end windows on each side project slightly, as do the central six windows. The houses have glazing bar sash windows, and the end pavilions and center have continuous first-floor balconies, while the other sections feature separate balconies for the first-floor windows, supported by cast iron baluster patterns that are bracketed from the band over the ground floor. Small basement windows are adorned with keystones. The doorways have raised surrounds with shallow pediments, accessed by steps with railings, and feature panelled doors with rectangular lights above. Nos 5 and 6 were originally one house, built for the Duke's agent. To the southeast, there is a slightly later stable block that is two storeys high, with three windows and three doorways, constructed of cut squared rubble. The front of No 6 is extended to the southeast by an ashlar-faced coach arch with raised surrounds and a keystone, flanked by niches.
