Description

The war memorial was erected in 1920. It stands on a triangular base with corner piers, topped by a segmental moulded cornice. Three scroll brackets support plain Doric columns, which in turn hold an ornamental lamp holder. Each corner pier supports a bronze figure – depicting a soldier, sailor, and airman – sculpted by R Hedley in 1921, and portraying mourning figures holding reversed 303 rifles. Two plaques are inscribed with extensive lists of names of those who died in the First World War (1914-18) and one plaque commemorates those who died in the Second World War (1939-45).
