Description
22 Bondgate Without is a building from the 17th and 18th centuries that has been altered over time. It is two storeys high and features three windows. The exterior is made of coursed rubble, topped with a slate roof that has three fretted bargeboard gables above the windows. On the first floor, there are single hung sash windows with glazing bars in the upper sashes. The ground floor has two later square bay windows flanking a central doorway, which is adorned with panelled pilasters and an open pediment that includes a blind radiating fanlight. Inside, the space is low. At the rear, there is a small courtyard with extensions to a later two-storey section that has two Yorkshire sash windows. The house was originally built for a Catholic family and is said to have a priest's hole, although what is currently referred to as 'the priest's hole' is actually a blocked chimney breast, which is not convincing as such.
