Description

The former railway terminus, rebuilt in 1887, is likely the work of architect William Bell, who also designed the Darlington Bank Top Station in the same year. This large and solid structure is built of rock-faced snecked rubble with slate roofs, intended to be worthy of the ducal town and to accommodate the Alnmouth and Coldstream branch lines.

The west-facing booking hall is a single-storey design with rounded corners, featuring two pairs of windows on the sides and corners, along with triple openings beside a large central entrance. A cast iron bracketed canopy extends across the central portion. The building has three ridge chimneys, with the tops of the train sheds set back and capped with open segmental pediments. The plinth and modillions support a high eaves cornice. The segmental-headed windows are fitted with "Board-School" glazing and have a continuous hood roll, which is only interrupted by end piers.

The side elevations consist of 16 bays, each with segmental-headed windows arranged in panels created by dividing piers, along with a plinth and modillion cornice positioned below the eaves level. The double train sheds, which are still partly open to the east, are flanked by large side piers that frame two wide segmental arches with vertical cast iron glazing on a cambered base. A smaller segmental arch separates these train shed arches from the central platforms, which also feature vertical cast iron glazing. Inside, the terminus has three aisles of seven bays, separated by cast iron columns with simple Corinthian capitals that support girder arches. The roofs are segmental, with raised central parts above the train lines.
