Description

The Belvedere at the junction of walks at the east end of Avenham Park is a gazebo built between 1865 and 1866. It is constructed from rendered brick with a sandstone facade that is painted white, and it features a flat roof. The building has a shallow rectangular plan and is designed in a classical style. It is a single-storey structure built back-to-earth, with a symmetrical layout consisting of three bays in the center and one bay at each end.

The front and ends are open and arcaded, with the center featuring a slightly projected and taller porch that is accessed by a flight of nine stone steps. This porch has a large round-headed arch supported by Corinthian columns, with moulded impost bands and a moulded extrados that includes a keystone. The arch is flanked by roundels that display shields of arms and topped with a modillioned cornice. The three-bay side ranges have similar but smaller arches on slender Corinthian columns, which have square caps and are adorned with moulded cornices and blocking courses. The one-bay returned ends match the design of the sides.

Inside, there is blind arcading on the rear wall of each side range. The original site of the Belvedere is now occupied by the Derby Monument, which was dismantled and re-erected on this site around 1873.
