Description
This drinking fountain, located at the south-east corner of Avenham Park, was likely built around 1865 and has been altered since its construction. It is made of sandstone and features a coved recess set into the embankment. The fountain has a round-headed arch with a rusticated rock-faced surround, including imposts and a keystone. Inside, the stone is smoothly dressed in two pieces separated by a band at the impost level, with remnants of a water pipe protruding through the center, although the fittings have been removed. Originally, the fountain was built on the site of a natural spring, which eventually dried up, leading to the installation of piped water in the 1880s.
