Description
This is a set of four ornamental lamps located at the north entrance to Avenham Walk in Preston. They were built in the late 19th century to replace former gate piers and railings. The lamps are made of sandstone and cast iron. There are two pairs of lamps, one pair at each corner of the north end of the promenade. Each pair is connected by a low quadrant wall of ashlar to the pedestals.
Each lamp features a broad square stone pedestal with a moulded plinth and panelled sides. The cast-iron standard includes a vase pedestal with a wide gadrooned base and raised foliated decoration on the vessel and its cap, along with a shaft that has acanthus leaf detailing at both the base and cap. At the time of the survey, the lanterns had been temporarily removed. These lamps are a prominent feature in the area, which is overlooked by the Harris Institute to the north, Bushell Place to the east, and Avenham Colonnade and Ribblesdale Place to the west. Renovation work was ongoing at the time of the survey.
