Description

This house, now converted into flats, was built around 1830 and has been altered since. It is constructed of red brick laid in a Flemish bond pattern (now with a repair technique called buttered pointing), with sandstone dressings and a slate roof. The house follows a double-depth plan, with a projecting rear wing. The main facade is symmetrical, with three bays arranged over cellars, and features a plain frieze and a moulded cornice. The central doorway has an engaged Tuscan column surround with square abaci, a plain frieze, a moulded cornice, a six-panel door, and an overlight with margin panes. Above the door is a four-pane sash window with a projecting cornice supported by consoles. Flanking this are two-storey sandstone ashlar canted bays, each with four-pane sash windows. The second floor has three shorter four-pane sash windows, each with a segmental lintel. The left-hand side of the roof is hipped, with a large chimney stack on that slope, and another at the right-hand gable. The left return wall, facing Avenham Lane, has blind windows in the first bay, a doorway in the third bay, and four-pane sash windows. An added two-storey, three-bay wing extends to the rear. The cellar area on this side is protected by cast-iron railings with fleur-de-lys finials. Inside, there's a staircase with stick balusters. The moulded plaster cornices include bobbin-and-reel and egg-and-dart decoration, along with stiff-leaf modillions. A blocked well is located in the cellar, and the rear wing is said to have contained a former ballroom.
