Description
No. 9 Bank Parade is a town house, now converted into flats, built around 1830 and altered since. It is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, with sandstone dressings and a slate roof. The building has a double-depth, double-fronted plan with a back extension, standing three storeys over a basement and featuring three symmetrical bays, with the central bay slightly projecting.
The façade includes a stone plinth, a sill-band at the first floor, a plain frieze, and a moulded cornice. The central bay boasts an impressive round-headed doorway with a brick surround in three orders, featuring a set-in doorcase supported by engaged Ionic columns, topped with an entablature and cornice. The door itself is glazed and panelled, accompanied by a fanlight with elegant pendant tracery. Above the doorway, there are French windows with glazing bars and margin panes that open onto a large rectangular cast-iron balcony adorned with geometrical-pattern railings.
The flanking bays have canted bay windows at the ground floor, each with cornices and blocking courses. The right bay has 4-pane sashed glazing, while the left bay has altered glazing. The first floor features 12-pane sashes, and the three windows at the second floor have also been altered, with all upper floor windows having wedge lintels.
Inside, the stairwell has some moulded plaster, but the rest of the interior was not inspected. Historically, this was the first house built on Bank Parade and is the only one depicted on Myres' map of 1836.
