Description

Number 5 is a town house, now converted into flats, dating from around 1840 and has been altered over time. It is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, with sandstone dressings and a slate roof. The building has a double-depth single-fronted plan with a back extension, standing three storeys over a basement and featuring two bays.

The exterior includes a stone plinth, a band at the first floor, a plain frieze, and a moulded cornice. The doorway, located to the left and accessed by three steps, has a semi-elliptical head made of gauged brick. It features a set-in doorcase with three-quarter columns that have stiff-leaf capitals and square abaci, topped with a moulded entablature adorned with small modillions. The door itself has round-headed panels and a plain fanlight with a Greek-key surround.

On the ground floor, there is a canted bay with a cellar window set in the plinth, 4-pane sashed glazing, and a moulded cornice with a blocking course. The upper floors each have 4-pane sashes with wedge lintels, and the second floor windows have raised sills. A chimney stack is located at the junction with No. 4 to the right. The rear of the building features a small canted bay at the ground floor, with 12-pane sashes above, and a two-storey back extension that includes a sash window with 16 panes.

The interior has not been inspected, but it is believed that the cellar connects by a tunnel under the road to a garden opposite, which is enclosed by spear railings with urn finials.
