Description

A pair of small townhouses, built around 1840 and altered at the rear. They are located on Frenchwood Street, Preston. The buildings are constructed of red brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with sandstone dressings and a slate roof. The buildings have a double-depth plan. Number 36 has a double-fronted facade, slightly canted back at the bend in the street, while number 37 has a single-fronted facade. Both buildings have rear extensions, with the one at number 36 recently rebuilt.

The houses are two storeys high, with cellars, and have 3 bays on the front of number 36, and 2 bays on the front of number 37. Features include a rendered plinth, a sill band on the first floor, a plain frieze, a moulded gutter cornice, and a downspout slot at the angled junction of the street. Number 36 is almost symmetrical, with the central openings slightly offset to the right. Number 37 has its doorway in the first bay, up two altered steps, and both doorways have moulded architraves with dentil cornices on consoles. The doors are 4-panel affairs, with the upper panels rounded, and overlights above. Number 36 also has a lobby doorway at the left end, featuring a convex surround.

All windows appear to be unaltered 12-pane sash windows with square panes, raised sills, and wedge lintels. Cellar window gratings are set in the pavement beneath each ground-floor window. Number 36 has ridge chimneys, while number 37 has end-wall chimneys on both slopes. The interiors were not inspected. The buildings are similar in style to numbers 38 and 39, and were originally part of a group of late Georgian-style townhouses catering to the lower-middle class.
