PRESTON FRENCHWOOD STREET(South West side) Nos. 42 and 43

GV II Pair of small town houses. c.1850, altered. Red brick in 4 + 1English garden wall bond, with sandstone dressings, slate roof to No.42, concrete tile to No.43. Double-depth plan, each house single-fronted, with coupled back extensions and a through lobby in the centre. Two storeys over cellars, 2 + 2 bays; with a plain frieze and moulded gutter cornice. The doorway, forming a triplet in the centre with the lobby door between, up 3 and 2 steps respectively, have architraves of a hybrid type, with jambs which have set-in Tuscan quarter-columns, panelled imposts, a plain frieze and shallow cornice, and 5-panel doors with overlights; and between the steps a lobby doorway with a plain lintel. Each house has one window at ground floor and 2 above, all with raised sills and those at ground floor with wedge lintels, and No.42 has a small inserted window to the right at 1st floor; cellar windows blocked. End-wall chimneys on both slopes. Rear and INTERIORS not inspected. The item is a relatively late addition to a formerly complete set of late Georgian lower-middle class town houses in this street.
