Description
Nos. 42 and 43 Frenchwood Street are a pair of small townhouses built around 1850, with some alterations. They are constructed of red brick in a four and one English garden wall bond, featuring sandstone dressings. No. 42 has a slate roof, while No. 43 has a concrete tile roof. Each house has a double-depth plan and is single-fronted, with coupled back extensions and a central through lobby.
The buildings are two storeys high with cellars, comprising two bays on the ground floor and two on the first floor. They have a plain frieze and a moulded gutter cornice. The doorways form a triplet in the centre, with the lobby door positioned between them, accessed by three and two steps respectively. The doorways feature hybrid architraves with jambs that include set-in Tuscan quarter-columns, panelled imposts, a plain frieze, and a shallow cornice, along with five-panel doors that have overlights. Each house has one window on the ground floor and two on the first floor, all with raised sills; the ground floor windows have wedge lintels. No. 42 has a small inserted window on the right at the first floor, and the cellar windows have been blocked. Both houses have end-wall chimneys on their slopes.
The rear and interiors were not inspected. This pair is a relatively late addition to a previously complete set of late Georgian lower-middle class townhouses in the street and is included for its group value.
