Description
No. 40 Great Avenham Street is a small town house built around 1830, with some alterations. It features red brick in Flemish bond, sandstone dressings, and a slate roof. The house has a double-depth, single-fronted plan with back extensions and a through-lobby on the right side. It stands two storeys high over a cellar and has two bays, characterized by a plain frieze and a moulded gutter cornice.
The entrance is located to the right, accessed by two steps (now tiled), and features a round-headed architrave with a raised moulded rim and moulded imposts, along with a semi-circular fanlight that has original radiating metal tracery (the door itself has been altered). There is one window on the ground floor and two above, all with raised sills and wedge lintels (the glazing has been altered). The cellar window has a wedge lintel and is protected by grating. There are chimneys on both slopes at the left end. The rear and interior of the house have not been inspected. This property is part of a formerly complete set of late Georgian lower-middle class houses in the street, which was laid out in Great Avenham Field and advertised for sale as building plots in 1825.
