Description

A pair of town houses dating from around 1830, altered subsequently. The houses are built of red brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with sandstone dressings and a slate roof. They follow a double-depth plan, with each house having a single frontage, and back extensions. There is a through-lobby to the left of number 26. The houses are three storeys high, over cellars, and have 1 and 2 bays respectively. A first-floor sill band, plain frieze and moulded cornice are visible.

The two doorways, both positioned to the left of the properties, differ in their detail. Number 26 has a doorcase featuring engaged Tuscan columns with square abaci, a plain frieze, and a moulded cornice, topped by a segmental fanlight. Number 28 has a round-headed architrave with set-in Tuscan quarter columns, and a semi-circular fanlight with a hollow-moulded surround. The lobby doorway to the left of number 26 has a wedge lintel and a board door.

Number 26 has one window on the ground floor, and two on each floor above. Number 28 has one window on each floor. All windows are sash windows without glazing bars, and have raised sills and wedge lintels. The cellar windows have wedge lintels, with number 26’s window including a grating, and number 28's blocked. A lead downspout is located at the junction of the houses, descending only to ground-floor level where it enters the wall above the lobby door. The rear and interior of the properties were not inspected.

The houses were part of a larger group of late Georgian properties built for the lower middle class, in a street laid out in Great Avenham Field and advertised for sale as building plots in 1825.
