Description

A pair of houses, likely dating from the early to mid-19th century, stands in Nether Wyresdale. Constructed of sandstone rubble and topped with tile roofs, the buildings exhibit an unusual layout, featuring two blocks set at right angles, with their gable ends meeting around an octagonal tower.

Belvedere Cottage, facing south, comprises two bays and has modern windows with plain stone surrounds. The right-hand ground-floor window has been enlarged, while the left-hand window is partially obscured by a single-storey lean-to porch. The left-hand gable is coped with kneelers, and a chimney is located on the right-hand gable. Belvedere Farmhouse, facing west, is of three bays, with the left-hand bay being a later addition. Most windows have plain stone surrounds and are sash windows or sash windows with glazing bars, with the exception of the right-hand first-floor window, which is modern. A quoined surround defines the left-hand ground-floor door. A single-storey, gabled porch sits between the second and third bays of the farmhouse. A chimney is positioned to the left of the second bay. The farmhouse gable is coped with kneelers. Both gable ends adjoining the tower contain blocked doorways within round-arched surrounds.

The tower is characterized by two bands and a parapet with coping. Three of its visible faces, located at the angle between the two houses, have narrow windows with plain stone surrounds; these windows are sashed on the ground floor and sashed with glazing bars on the first floor. The central face of the tower has a door with a quoined surround on the ground floor and a blocked opening above.
