Description
1-3 Bell Horse Gate is a pair of houses, originally one, dating back to approximately 1700, with alterations made in the mid-18th century and the 20th century. The construction uses rubble stone with squared stone dressings, covered by a stone slate roof. The building is two stories and three bays wide. A gabled porch, built around 1740 and constructed of rusticated stone, is centrally positioned on the right-hand side, with a keyed lintel featuring five imitation voussoirs; the outer ones are joggled, and the centre three are dropped to resemble a dropped keystone. This porch contains a glazed door added in 1970. A 19th-century entrance is also present on the right-hand side, featuring a plain surround and a glazed door from 1970. To the left is an entrance with a 1970 door, and a segmental arched lintel frames a window with a four-pane fixed light, representing a former entrance. The ground floor has two windows, with the left-hand window appearing to be part of a mezzanine level. The upper floor has three windows; the window on the left has a chamfered surround, while the remaining windows have plain surrounds and 20th-century casements. Gable end shaped kneelers are present. Chimneys project from the gable end ridge on the left-hand side, as well as centrally positioned ridge stacks on the left and right. The building is of group value.
