Description
Derham House, built around 1800, is a two-storey house located in Lower Dolphinholme. It is constructed from sandstone rubble and features a tile roof. The building has three bays, with sash windows that include glazing bars and stone surrounds. The central bay contains a door with a doorcase supported by two attached Doric columns. The roof is hipped on the right side, and there are chimneys on the left and set back on the right. The right-hand return wall has a large tripartite window, also sash with glazing bars, featuring a plain stone surround and flat-faced mullions. On the first floor, there are two additional sash windows with glazing bars and plain stone surrounds.
Attached to the northern corner of the house is a gas lamp on an iron bracket, which was restored to working order in 1984. Derham House was once home to the manager of the Dolphinholme worsted spinning mill. Gas lighting was introduced in the mill in 1811 and was also used to illuminate the village street, making Dolphinholme one of the first villages to have gas lighting.
