Description
A row of mill workers' houses, likely built in 1796 for Clarkson, stands as a testament to the area’s industrial past. The buildings are constructed from sandstone rubble and have a slate roof. The row is three storeys high, with each house originally consisting of one bay. Windows are characterised by plain stone surrounds; most now have sash windows, though some have been replaced with modern frames. Each house originally featured a door to the left and a chimney to the right. The house on the left now incorporates the post office and shop. It retains sash windows with glazing bars on the ground and first floors. The original doorway has been blocked and replaced with a window. A stair window with a plain stone surround is located to the left. Adjoining the main row, and of two storeys, is the original shop, built using similar materials. The shop's end wall features a modern shop front on the ground floor and two modern windows with plain stone surrounds on the first floor. The rear of the houses is of one bay, with a door positioned to the right.
