Description
No. 1 West Street is a town house that has been converted into offices. It was built in the mid-19th century and underwent alterations in 1890. The exterior features stucco on masonry walls and a dry Delabole slate hipped roof with projecting eaves above a moulded cornice. The building has a double-depth plan with a two-storey, one-window section from 1890 on the left and a three-storey, two-window section on the right, which includes a recessed canted former entrance bay at the corner.
The 1890 section has pointed-arched openings, including a traceried window above a doorway that features a six-panel door and overlight. The main block displays channelled rustications on the ground floor, quoin rustications, and mid-floor strings, with hood moulds over the first-floor windows that rise over the strings to form aprons for the top windows. The second floor has four-pane horned sashes within moulded architraves, while the first floor has eared architraves.
On the ground floor, there is a 20th-century window within a pilastered opening that has a moulded hood on brackets to the left, and a former doorway (now with a 20th-century window) at the corner, featuring a pilastered doorcase with an open segmental pediment. Barras Place has a three-window return with string courses and a hood over the second-floor string on the left, a blind window above, and a window on the right with margin panes and coloured glass, with the rest being horned sashes. The interior has not been inspected. This building is included for its group value.
