Description

Cliff Cottage is a house dating from 1868, built by Valentine Powell Richards, as indicated by a datestone. The construction consists of stone rubble with rendered and painted side elevations, slate hanging, and a slate roof with a gable end to the front and a half-hipped end to the rear. A rendered brick chimney stack is located on the right-hand side. The house has a double-depth, two-room plan, with an entrance on the lower left-hand side elevation.

The front facade is a regular two-storey, single-window design with brick dressings framing pointed window openings. The ground floor features a cross window from the 19th century with glazing bars, and a similar window above with slightly different top lights. A datestone bears the initials V.P.R. and the date 1868. A single-story elevation faces Fore Street, while the two-story elevation to the south is affected by the slope of the ground towards the sea. A 20th-century lean-to porch has been added to the south. The interior has not been inspected. This building is recognized for its group value.
