Description
Long Copse is a house built in 1897 by Alfred Powell of the Artworkers' Guild, designed in a rustic style. It is constructed from Bargate sandstone blocks and rubblestone, topped with thatched roofs that feature ridge decorations and 'bonnet' ends. The building has a T-shaped plan, with an L-shape on the entrance front. It is a single-storey structure with attics, which are illuminated by 'eyebrow' dormers and gable ends. A square brick chimney stack is located at the junction of the ranges.
The windows are leaded casements, with stone-framed windows on the ends of the wings to the left. There is one 2-light casement window on the return wall of the wing, a dormer window to the left of the re-entrant angle, and another dormer to the right. The ground floor has a recessed area to the right featuring two 2-light casement windows. A door is positioned to the left in the angle of the two ranges, with an additional door to the right in a chamfered surround.
On the left-hand return front, there are three 'eyebrow' dormers and a rounded gabled bay to the right of the center. A large 5-light leaded window is located on the ground floor to the left. There is a wing projecting to the left, roofed with Horsham slabs, which includes a hipped dormer and a side stack. To the right, there is a glazed-in recess, and a pentice extension in a catslide roof to the left.
Inside, the house retains original doors and fitted furnishings, wooden lintels over the fireplaces, and wooden floors, all designed by Ernest Gimson.
