Description
Rapsley Farm House is a house dating from the late 16th century to the 17th century, with a 19th-century extension on the right. It features a timber frame on a sandstone rubble and brick plinth, with sandstone rubble and brick infill below, some arranged in a herringbone pattern, and whitewashed rendered infill above. The first floor displays some acorn and rose patterns in plaster, and the roof is plain tiled. The building has a T-shaped plan and is two storeys high.
On the left side, there are four framed bays with ogee bracing on the first floor and a corbelled stack at the rear centre. The first floor has five casement windows, one of which has diagonal mullions, while the ground floor has four windows. A 20th-century door is located to the right of centre.
The extension to the right is half-timbered, featuring a jettied gable on the first floor supported by scroll braces. It includes one three-light leaded casement window and one small window in a set-back bay to the left, along with one arched window on the ground floor. The entrance has a half-glazed door with a pointed head in a pointed arch surround and a chamfered, deep reveal. There is a deep-eaved catslide roof on the right end, and a single-storey weatherboarded range is located to the left.
The house is situated next to the site of a Roman villa that dates from 120 to 330 AD, which included baths and various attached buildings.
