Description
The Great House, also known as the Post Office, is a three-storey house built in 1766 by William Powell. It features a rough-cast exterior and a slate roof with flat 20th-century eaves that were formerly dentilled, along with rendered end stacks and ornate bargeboards on the left side. The front has a three-window range, with the centre section slightly projecting. There are three small square 6-pane sash windows under the eaves, while the first and ground floor windows are 20th-century hardwood 6-pane sashes. Flanking the plain centre 20th-century door in a stucco surround are two small triangular bays with red tiles. The right ground floor bay includes a door and window for the Post Office, featuring a 20th-century glazed door and a 6-pane sash window. Above the centre door is a plaque stating the house was built in 1766.
To the left, there is a one-bay section with a cambered-headed through arch and a small window above. The rear wing has 20th-century windows. Although the house has undergone significant alterations, the original staircase remains intact. It is a dog-leg design with four flights, closed-string construction, broad treads, turned balusters, and chamfered newels. There is also one oak doorcase leading into the entrance hall.
