Description

A girls' junior school, now part of Falmouth Art School, was built in 1907. It is constructed of dressed stone with granite dressings, including a plinth, copings, quoins, transomed mullioned windows, doorways, and copings to shaped and stepped gabled parapets. The roofs are dry Delabole slate hipped, with three parallel sections, along with window projections to the returns. An arcaded bellcote with an ogee lead roof and weather vane is located behind the principal entrance, and there is a single conical ventilator. The building has a regular rectangular plan, featuring a central hall/assembly block flanked by classrooms with passages between.

The architectural style is Jacobean Revival. The symmetrical front elevation has a 1:1:2:1:1 bay arrangement. The windows are chamfered and cross-transomed. A nowy-headed dormer window sits above a plaque set between the central pair of finialled shaped gables, which are flanked by pilasters. Quatrefoils are positioned over the four-light windows. Porches in the return angles feature three-light overlights set in nowy-headed pediments. The end bays are set back, with square returns to nowy-headed parapets over larger three-light windows similar to those on the return elevations. Original doors and windows with glazing bars remain. The interior has not been inspected. The building is a well-crafted example in a mannered, almost Art Nouveau, interpretation of the Jacobean style, commonly used for Board schools of the period.
