Description
The Former Royal Hotel is a public house that has been converted into a bank and shop. It dates from the early 19th century, with the front rebuilt and other modifications made in the 1920s. The building features stucco with channelled rustication, large end pilasters over the rustication, and a modillion cornice at the tall parapet, although the roof is not visible. It occupies a large corner site with a curved front and stands three storeys high. The front has a three-to-one bay arrangement with horned sash windows that include glazing bars, as well as a large pedimented window with four Tuscan half-columns on the upper floors to the right. The ground floor has a moulded string and fascia above two recessed shop fronts, which are framed by central Tuscan columns. The left-hand return has a two-to-one bay layout with similar architectural details. The interior has not been inspected. The building is included for its group value.
