Description

The Old School is a national school built in 1849. It features shale rubble walls with granite quoins, plinth coping, jambstones, sills, mullions, arches, and lintels. The steep dry Delabole slate roofs have projecting eaves, shaped wooden barge boards, and turned wooden pendants at the gable ends. The main roof is topped with a sprocketted pyramidal-roofed louvered cupola. The building has a rectangular schoolroom layout with a porch on the front left. Designed in the Tudor style, it was originally a single storey, but a floor was added around the 1970s.

The north entrance front includes a porch on the left with steep 4-centred arched outer and inner doorways, and a single-light window on the east wall. To the right of the porch is a 4-light flat-headed mullioned window. There is a similar 3-light window with a relieving arch on the east gable end and on the south wall to the right, which also has a blocked 4-centred arched doorway on the left. The south gable is blind, but there may be an internal cupboard in the position of the fireplace.

Inside, the building has been remodelled in the 20th century but retains original arch-braced roof structures, which are partly visible on the first floor and fully exposed in the porch. It also features original arched ledged and braced doors with original door furniture.
