Description
The milestone dates to 1754 and stands approximately 8 metres west of No. 32, located against a hedge bank on the east side of Old Coach Road. It is constructed from stone and has a rectangular plan with a cylindrical, rounded top, rising to a height of around 127 centimetres. The front face is inscribed, in black paint, with the words "FROM TRURO 2 MILES". The milestone is painted white. A benchmark is situated at the top of the front face, and a metal pin is affixed to the top of the stone.
The milestone is a physical reminder of the activities of the Truro Turnpike Trust, which was established by an Act of Parliament in 1754, and was one of the first milestones erected by the trust. It originally marked a turnpike road south of Truro, via Calenick. A newer, gentler route was opened in 1829, and the milestone was seemingly left in place. The road ceased to be a turnpike in 1855. The milestone is depicted on the First Edition Ordnance Survey Map of around 1880. It is designated as a Grade II listed building due to its historical interest as a testament to 18th-century road improvements carried out by Turnpike Trusts, and due to its intact condition having retained its lettering and original position.
