Description
The milestone dates to approximately 1756. It is located on the south side of the road, approximately 40 metres south-west of No. 7 Southlea Terrace in Stithians.
The milestone is constructed of granite and has a rectangular plan with a rounded top. It stands approximately 1.17 metres high and is painted white. The front is inscribed with the words "FROM TRURO 9 MILES" in black paint. The top left-hand corner and the first letter of the inscription are damaged. The “9” is elaborately curled, and a benchmark is located below the inscription.
Historically, roads were maintained by parishes, and later by turnpike trusts established from 1663 onwards. These trusts levied tolls for road upkeep, and milestones were erected from the mid-18th century onwards to mark routes. The milestone is one of four that were erected in 1756 as part of the Truro Turnpike Trust's route between Perranwell and Tretheague Bridge. It appears on the First Edition Ordnance Survey Map of around 1880 in its present location.
The milestone is designated at Grade II for its intactness as a good example of a mid-18th century milestone, for its historic interest in illustrating the development of the transport network, and for its group value with the three other surviving milestones along that road south-west of Truro.
