Description
This is a mid-18th century milestone located approximately 74 meters southwest of a reservoir in Probus. The milestone dates from 1754 and is constructed of stone. It has a rectangular plan with a cylindrical, rounded top, and stands approximately 0.84 meters high. The milestone is inscribed with the words "FROM TRURO 6 MILES" in black paint and is painted white. A partly erased benchmark is visible at the base, and a bench mark with a metal pin is at the top.
Historically, roads were maintained by the parishes they passed through; the establishment of turnpike trusts in the 17th and 18th centuries provided a mechanism for road upkeep through the levying of tolls. The Truro Turnpike Trust was established by Act of Parliament in 1754 and this milestone originally marked the route between Truro and Grampound. It is one of four original milestones along that former turnpike road. In 1828, the road was diverted, but the milestones were left in their original locations. The milestone is depicted on the 1907 Ordnance Survey map.
The milestone is designated at Grade II for its intactness and historic interest as a physical reminder of the 18th-century road improvement program undertaken by Turnpike Trusts, and it possesses group value with other milestones along the route.
