Description
Sprys Farmhouse is a house dating from around the 17th century, with alterations made in the 18th and 19th centuries. It is constructed primarily of shale with granite quoins and dressings, and cob at the rear, and has a scantle slate roof with gabled ends and brick stacks. The building is arranged in an L-shape, incorporating a rear wing and a central, projecting porch. It is two storeys and has an attic, and originally had a three-window front. The central porch has a two-storey gabled form, featuring a segmental brick arch doorway and a 12-pane sash window above the doorway on each floor. The left-hand side showcases wide 20-pane sashes, while the right-hand side has 2-light casements with glazing bars. All window openings are topped with segmental brick arches. Two granite quoins on the right side appear to be reused elements from earlier mullioned windows. A stair window at the rear incorporates marginal glazing bars. Inside, a wide, straight staircase, likely from the 18th century, is located to the left of centre. A more original dog-leg staircase with winders sits behind the left room in the rear wing. A 2-panel door to this staircase has very wide stiles and rails, suggestive of a late 17th-century origin. The interior also includes two open fireplaces, one in the right-hand room with a clom oven. A granite flight of six steps, complete with a wrought iron handrail, leads up to the porch.
