Description

Glebe House is a rectory, later adapted for residential use, built in 1839 by George Wightwick. It is constructed from stucco with a Delabole slate gabled roof and features axial, lateral, and gable chimneys. The house comprises a single-depth main block with wings extending to the west and east. The west elevation, in a Tudor Gothic style, presents a symmetrical facade with a gabled wing, a bay window, a gabled porch, and further bays. A continuous plinth runs along the base. The left wing incorporates a bay window with a slate roof and a first-floor window with a hood mould and a recessed trefoil in the gable. The central porch has a two-story design and features a four-centred arched doorway with a hood mould and a pointed arched window above, also with a hood mould. An engaged octagonal gable chimney, possibly cast iron, is present. Bays flanking the porch have narrow windows, with hood moulds over the ground-floor openings. The right bay includes French windows with a square fanlight and a hood mould, and a narrower first-floor window, again with a recessed trefoil. Splayed corners incorporate pendant stops under kneeler corbels. The east elevation has a slightly projecting gable bay, a wide windowed bay, a stairwell bay, and a single-story service wing (one storey having been removed). Inside, the house includes vaulted corridors behind the porch on both the ground and first floors. Original features such as a staircase with chamfered square newels and balusters, original panelled doors, and decorative ceiling cornices remain.
