Description
This house in Culham dates back to 1750 and was extended in the early 19th century. It is constructed of painted stone rubble and features a slate roof with gabled ends and red clay crested ridge tiles, along with gable-end stacks that have short red brick shafts.
The building has a two-room plan with a central passage, where the kitchen is located on the left and the parlour on the right, both heated by gable-end stacks. The exterior is two stories high and has an almost symmetrical three-bay west front. It includes small late 19th-century six-pane sash windows and a smaller four-pane sash window at the center of the first floor. The central doorway features a recessed 19th-century panelled and glazed door, and there is a small stone tablet to the left of the center inscribed with the date 1750. The rear outshut was raised to two stories in the early 19th century, with a central stair window and a 19th-century casement window on the first floor to the left; other rear windows and doors were added in the late 20th century.
Inside, the through-passage has panelled partitions with two-panel doors and a slate floor. The former kitchen fireplace on the left features a chamfered timber bressumer and an oven. The first floor has exposed joists, two-panel doors, and a panelled partition. The landing balustrade of the staircase has stick balusters and a moulded handrail, although the remainder of the staircase has been replaced. The roof structure has also been altered. Overall, this is a largely complete mid-18th-century small house.
