Description

School Cottage is a former school and schoolhouse, now a private house, dating from 1842. It is constructed of slatestone rubble with granite dressings and features Delabole slate gable roofs along with an axial stack that has diagonally set brick chimneys. The building is designed in the Tudor Gothic style and has a T-shaped layout, comprising a schoolroom and two schoolhouse rooms with chambers above.

The northeast front displays a two-storey, one-window gable for the schoolhouse on the left and a two-window single-storey schoolhouse on the right. The gable windows on both the ground and first floors are 2-light granite mullions with 8-pane timber casements. To the right of the schoolroom, there are two similar windows but with three lights. A small original window is located to the far left, and between the windows is a carved free stone head with a cable moulded shaft below, likely from the 12th century and reset in its current position.

The gable end of the schoolroom features a central door with a worn threshold stone and a narrower door to the left, both topped with hoodmoulds. Above the middle door and below the datestone is a small 4-pane window, which may have been the location of a former architectural feature, possibly a bell. The southwest wall of the schoolroom retains original 3-light wooden casements with internal iron bars. To the right, there is an arched recess that may have once housed a water pump.

Inside, the schoolhouse includes a bread oven, and the schoolroom roof is supported by arched bracing.
