Description

Eglos Merther Farmhouse and courtyard wall is a farmhouse dating from 1806 to 1808, which was a rebuilding of an earlier house. It is constructed from slatestone rubble with granite dressings and features an asbestos hipped slate roof, with ashlar chimneys over the side walls and an axial stack over the wing. The building is 1½ rooms deep and has a central stair plan with a rear wing and a lean-to against the wing within the courtyard. It stands two storeys high and has a symmetrical three-window garden front that is rendered, with a granite ashlar plinth and a granite string at first floor sill level. The central doorway is round-headed, featuring long and short granite voussoirs, and has a four-panel door with a fanlight that has been replaced by a single pane. The windows are original 16-pane timber sashes with cambered heads and granite keystones. There is a round-headed stair window at the rear and cambered granite arches leading to the lean-to. Inside, the farmhouse retains original shutters and an open well stair with stick balusters. There is a small china room and a game hanging room located behind the main reception rooms, along with a further reception room in the wing and a service room beyond, with servants' quarters above. A slatestone rubble wall with a gate encloses the rear courtyard to the northeast.
