Description
Ruan Major Farmhouse, originally a rectory, dates from the 17th century and has been altered in the 19th century, with the eaves and ridge heightened in the 20th century at the rear. The building is constructed of rubble stone with some granite dressings and has a patent tiled roof, which was originally thatched. It features two brick stacks on the front south slope at the gable ends. The farmhouse is two storeys high and has an asymmetrical four-window front.
On the ground floor, there are two 2-light horizontal sliding sash windows to the left of the timber planked entrance door and a 3-light horizontal sliding sash window to the right. The first floor has, from left to right, one triple 18-pane horizontal sliding sash window, two 2-light horizontal sliding sash windows, and one 3-light casement window, all with glazing bars.
There is a garage with an asbestos slate roof on the left-hand gable. Inside, on the right-hand side, there is a large fireplace with chamfered timber lintels and run-out stops, along with a small bread oven. There is also a smaller fireplace on the left-hand side with a canted chamfered lintel. The first floor was not inspected.
