Description
Hendra Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the late 17th century. It features rendered stone rubble walls and a slurried scantle slate roof, with brick chimneys at the gabled ends. The layout consists of two rooms with a central cross passage that has been blocked by a staircase located in a rear projection. A dairy has been added under a cat slide roof on the northeast side. The building is two storeys high and has a symmetrical south front with three windows. On the ground floor, there are two 20th-century two-light casement windows without glazing bars flanking a 20th-century timber door. The first floor has three 20th-century two-light casement windows, also without glazing bars. The rear (north) elevation features a staircase projection under a hipped roof. There are 18th and 20th-century extensions to the northeast. Inside, there is a room on the east side with a large open fireplace that has a granite lintel and two cloan ovens. The farmhouse also has unusual 17th-century ovolo moulded beams and a late 17th-century dog-leg staircase with simple turned balustrades, a moulded rail, and a flat bun finial on the newel post. The roof space has not been inspected. Approximately 200 meters to the east of the farmhouse, there is a crocheted finial, possibly from a nearby chapel.
