Description

The Church of St Rumon is a parish church that is now redundant and in a state of ruin. The chancel likely dates back to the 13th century, while the tower was built in the late 14th century. The south arcade was constructed in the early 15th century, with the north arcade following slightly later. The porch was added in the late 15th century. Significant alterations were made in 1866-67, during which the aisles were removed and the arcades were walled up, and the porch was relocated.

The church is built of rubble stone, featuring large ashlar blocks of serpentine and granite in the tower, though the roofs are now missing. The east window has three lights with 19th-century plate tracery. The north wall of the nave has been walled up, while the south wall contains three two-light windows with trefoils above, all set under three-centred arches. The south door is located under a moulded three-centred arch with carved spandrels.

The gabled porch features octagonal engaged shafts with cusped blind tracery, similar to that found at Mullion Church, although the carved capitals are eroded. The porch also has a moulded three-centred arch. The west tower is unbuttressed and battlemented, topped with crocketted pinnacles, and includes two staircases with bold string courses. The west door has a segmental head and chamfered granite jambs, with voussoirs. The west window features three-light Reticulated tracery under a three-centred arch with banded voussoirs, and there are two-light belfry openings with louvres on each face.

The south arcade consists of type-A (Pevsner) piers with low bases and moulded capitals and abaci, supporting moulded round arches. The north arcade has similar type-A (Pevsner) piers but with square abaci, and there is a break in the arcade for a rood screen. A porphyry coffin lid can be found on the floor of the tower.
