Description
Lower Millcombe Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the early to mid 17th century, with alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries. It is constructed of slatestone rubble with granite dressings, and has a slate roof with gable ends and ridge tiles, some original hand-made crested ridge tiles surviving. A gable end stack with a rubble shaft is located on the left gable end, and a front lateral stack with a brick shaft is located on the right.
The house appears to have originally been arranged with a 3-room plan: two rooms to the left, with the entrance directly into the left room, which is heated by the gable end stack. The room to the right may have originally been heated by a gable end stack. The building wall breaks forward to the right, and the end room to the right has a front lateral stack for heating. A straight joint marks the unheated end bay.
The left range of the house is symmetrical and has two windows. The right range is at a higher roof level and has been re-roofed. The left range has a granite doorway, hollow-chamfered with recessed spandrels featuring roundels and a hood mould, leading to a plain door. There are granite three-light casements to the left and right of the doorway, also chamfered and with hood moulds, fitted with 3-pane 20th-century casements. An identical three-light casement is located at first floor to the right and left, with L hinges and iron stanchions. A small single-light window is present at ground floor, and a single light at first floor, both with chamfered granite lintels. The wall breaks forward to the right where the front lateral stack is situated, raising the roof level. A two-pane light is positioned to the right of the stack at ground floor; to the right again, a straight joint is visible at the upper level. A plain door and a small six-pane casement with a timber lintel are found here at ground and first floors respectively. The left side of the building is blind, featuring large granite quoins. The right side also has granite quoins, with a 20th-century casement with a timber lintel at ground and first floor. A two-light casement is located at first floor to the left and an additional one at the apex of the gable, both windows having roughly hewn timber frames and lintels. The rear elevation features a straight joint and quoins between the two ranges. A taller range is built into the rear and features a 20th-century casement at first floor to the right.
