Description
The Barton is a farmhouse dating from the early to mid-19th century, with later 19th-century alterations and some 20th-century changes. It is constructed of painted slatestone rubble, with slate-hanging to the front and left side using rag slates. The rear outshut is rendered. The roof is hipped and slate-covered in two spans, featuring crested ridge tiles. Stacks with rendered shafts are located to the right and left of the front range, and at the rear left of the rear range.
The house is arranged with a double-depth plan. The front of the house faces the garden, with a central entrance leading into a principal room to the front left and right, each heated by an end stack. A stair hall is situated to the right side, with an unheated dairy at the rear right. The kitchen occupies the rear left, also heated by an end stack. Behind the dairy and passage is a single-storey unheated outshut, forming a rear porch entrance.
The two-storey, symmetrical front has three windows. The ground floor has a central 20th-century half-glazed door with a margin-glazed overlight. There are 19th-century 16-pane sash windows to the right and left, each with a cambered arch. The first floor features three 19th-century 16-pane sashes with cambered arches. A window to the cellar, also with a cambered arch, is located to the right. The left end is blind. The right end has a 19th-century 2-light 3-pane casement at ground floor and a 20th-century window with a cambered arch at ground floor to the centre. At the first floor, a central 19th-century 24-pane sash, also with a cambered arch, illuminates the stair hall. At the rear, the single-storey outshut incorporates a plank door, a 20th-century 2-light casement, a 19th-century 6-panelled door, and an 8-pane window. The main range has a 19th-century 16-pane sash at ground floor to the right, with a cambered brick arch. The interior was not inspected.
