Description

West Town Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the 17th century, with alterations and additions made in the 19th and 20th centuries. It is constructed of rendered stone rubble and features a rag slate roof with ridge tiles and gable ends. The building has a three-room and through passage plan, with the lower end room on the right serving as a shippon. The left room is heated by a gable end stack, while a central room is heated by an axial stack that backs onto the passage. A 20th-century porch has been added in front of the entrance. The shippon at the right end has likely been rebuilt around the 19th century. There is an unheated outshut at the rear left and a lean-to at the lower right-hand end.

The exterior is two storeys high and has an asymmetrical three-window front. On the ground floor to the left, there are two 19th-century six-pane sash windows, one with a truncated hood mould and the other with a complete hood mould. The first floor to the left features two 19th-century four-pane sash windows. To the right, there is a 20th-century porch with a small 20th-century window above it. A plank door leads to the shippon on the right. The blind left end has an external stack, and the right end includes a single-storey lean-to. At the rear, there is a single-storey outshut to the right with a 20th-century window on the side, built into the bank at the back. A 19th-century plank door is located at the rear of the passage, and there is a 19th-century two-pane window with a slate cill on the first floor to the left, along with a small single-storey lean-to to the left.

The interior has not been inspected but may retain some features from the 17th century. This farmhouse is notable for still having the shippon at the lower end.
