Description
Upstream and Garden Cottage is a pair of houses built in the early 19th century, with some alterations made in the 20th century. The buildings are constructed of rendered rubble and feature a slate roof with brick stacks at the gable ends and a ridge stack. The overall layout consists of three rooms, with a passage between the left and centre rooms.
The cottages are two storeys high and have five windows, arranged in two pairs on the left and one single window on the right, all of which are 20th-century two-light casements with cambered heads. In the centre of the paired windows, there is a gabled porch with bargeboards and 20th-century double doors. To the right of the porch, a French window has replaced the original casements. The eaves are deep and supported by brackets.
The right gable end features a half-glazed door and a two-light casement on the first floor, while the left gable end has a 20th-century conservatory attached. There is also a single-storey addition at the rear left. The interior has not been inspected. Historically, Upstream and Garden Cottage were part of the kitchen garden buildings for Mount Edgcumbe. A diary entry from John Swete in 1780 mentions the "Village of Emptycombe near the new garden of Lord Mount Edgcumbe beneath the old round tower."
