Description
Empacombe Cottage is an early 19th-century house, built around 1800. It is constructed of rendered stone and features a hipped slate roof with two ridge stacks. The layout is a double depth plan, with a central entrance hall leading to two front rooms and two rear rooms. The front is single storey, while the ground falls away at the rear. The cottage is designed in the Regency Gothic style, showcasing a pointed arch doorway with an interlace fanlight, flanked by sash windows that have interlace heads and marginal glazing. There are small round-headed niches on either side of the door. The garden front includes a castellated canted bay for the living room, with two light windows on the sides and three in the middle, along with an original sash window to the right. The rear elevation, which is on sloping ground, shows some alterations, with gabled ends on either side of a now-filled recess in the center.
Inside, the cottage has a central hallway with four rooms opening off it. The doors are six-panelled and set in pointed arch surrounds, featuring Y tracery in the heads and Greek key imposts. The sitting room to the right retains a plain unaltered interior, complete with a cornice and a marble fireplace that has roundels and a basket grate. The kitchen still has its original fireplace and a fitted larder. Overall, Empacombe Cottage is a somewhat altered Regency cottage that combines both Gothic and classical architectural features.
