Description

Bay Cottage is a house with origins dating back to the 17th century, though it underwent significant alterations in the 19th century. The building is constructed of mixed rubble and features a hipped slate roof. It has a central entry and is a single-depth house with a projecting stair at the rear. The left side was filled in with red brick in the late 19th century, while the right side was filled in during the 20th century. The house is two stories tall with a three-window front. The ground floor includes a central gabled trellis porch with a 20th-century glazed door. To the left, there is a paired 12-pane sash window, and above it, a paired 8-pane sash window. The other windows are single sashes, all of which are replacements. The hipped roof has overhanging eaves, with a gable stack on the front right and a rear lateral stack that includes an oven to the left. The side elevation features a paired 4-pane sash window with a segmental head on the ground floor and a paired 6-pane sash window above.

Inside, the interior has been largely altered but still retains a winder stair and some early 18th-century doors with H-L hinges. Bay Cottage is situated within what was once the kitchen garden of Mount Edgcumbe and may have served as the head gardener's house. In the first-floor bedroom, there was previously a painted overmantel decorated with the Stuart Royal Arms and the initials CR.
