Description

Cross View is a house located in Egton Village, dating from the 17th century or earlier, with the front rebuilt in the 18th century and alterations made in the 19th century. The building was re-roofed around 1980. It features cruck framing encased in tooled sandstone, with some herringbone work at the front, while the rear is made of whitewashed rubble. The roof is thatched with straw, and there are stone and rebuilt brick stacks.

The house has a single-storey front with five openings. The central left opening contains a 20th-century part-glazed door, and to the left is a squat 6-pane sash window with a painted stone sill, both featuring hammered lintels. To the right of the door is an enlarged fire window with a 9-pane fixed light. Further right, there is a tripartite window with a central sash, and at the far right end, a 2-light, 8-pane horizontal sliding sash window. All windows to the right of the door have painted timber lintels. There is a corniced stack to the left of the center and an external stack at the right end.

Inside, there is a pair of full or raised crucks, mostly boxed in but with a visible tie beam, located between the center and right end rooms. The room to the right of the door features a reconstructed inglenook fireplace that includes an enlarged spice cupboard recess. The curved outer wall at the back of the center room was originally a box bed alcove.
