Description
No. 4 High Street is a house located in Egton Village, dated 1880, which incorporates remains of a 17th-century house. It is constructed from re-used sandstone, some of which is tooled, hammered, and squared, and features a stone slate roof with stone dressings. The building is two stories tall with an irregular front that has three windows. There are paired doors on the left side, which have glazed panels. A chamfered and quoined doorway on the right-hand side features a lintel dated 1686, which is a remnant of the earlier house. All windows are 4-pane sashes, with paired windows located to the right of center, beneath a relieving arch. The openings are all quoined and chamfered, mimicking the style of the dated doorway. A recessed date panel in a moulded surround on the first floor indicates that the building was rebuilt in 1880 for the Foster (Egton) Estate. The house has corbelled eaves, coped gables, and moulded kneelers that support ball and pedestal finials, with stacks at the ends and left of center.
