Description

The walls, piers, and gates surrounding the churchyard of St Hilda in Egton were built in 1879 by E.H. Smales. They are made of rusticated sandstone and sandstone ashlar, featuring an iron gate. The wall varies in height, stepping up in places and topped with sloped coping. Taller rectangular-section piers have chamfered flat caps, while the main entrance piers are cylindrical with criss-cross incisions and conical caps. The north wall and the south-west corner include two pinnacles shaped like tourelles, which are coarsely reeded and topped with conical caps designed to resemble fish-scale tiles. A pedestrian gate in the south-west corner is made of scrolled wrought iron and features pomegranate finials. There is a 20th-century gateway to the Vicarage inserted in the south wall, which is not of special interest.
