Description

EGTON EGTON VILLAGE NZ8005-8105 (east side) 16/16 Walls, piers and gates to churchyard of St.Hilda GV II Churchyard walls, piers, gate and gate piers. 1879. By E.H.Smales. Rusticated sandstone and sandstone ashlar. Iron gate. Wall, varying in height, stepped up in places and with sloped coping. Taller rectangular- section piers with chamfered flat caps. Main entrance piers cylindrical on plan with criss-cross incisions and conical caps. In north wall and at south-west corner are two pinnacles in the form of tourelles, coarsely reeded, with conical caps carved as fish-scale tiles. Pedestrian gate in south-west corner in scrolly wrought iron with pomegranate finials. C20 gateway to Vicarage, inserted in south wall, not of special interest.
