Description

The Church of St Hilda, located on Thornleigh Street in Jesmond, Newcastle upon Tyne, is a parish church built between 1900 and 1905 by architects Hicks and Charlewood. It is constructed from snecked sandstone with ashlar dressings and features a graduated Lakeland slate roof. The church is designed in the Perpendicular style and includes an aisled nave and chancel, a north-west belfry, and a north vestry.

The west bay of the north aisle has a moulded 2-centred arch leading to a double boarded door, with a low octagonal belfry to the right. The nave aisles are adorned with square-headed 5-light windows, while the chancel has 2-light windows. The east window is a prominent 5-light design with a 2-centred head and flowing tracery. The exterior is enhanced by set-back buttresses, a roll-moulded parapet, gable coping with a cross finial, and a hipped roof on the vestry. A tall central fleche, covered in copper, features swept eaves and a slender iron cross finial.

Inside, the church has painted plaster walls and ashlar arcades, with a pointed barrel roof. The 4-bay nave showcases alternate round and octagonal piers supporting double-chamfered arches on moulded capitals, while the Lady chapel has two octagonal piers. There is a blind west arch and a shouldered arch leading to the vestry door. The octagonal font is decorated with blind tracery and square flower bosses. A war memorial triptych by F.H. Newbery A.R.C.A. is located in the north aisle, depicting figures of a soldier, sailor, locomotive engineer, and miner, alongside Saints Nicholas and Hilda.
