Description

This is a post box situated north of number 4 on the south side of Osborne Avenue, Newcastle upon Tyne. It dates from between 1872 and 1879 and is an example of the third Penfold type. The post box is an octagonal structure with a plinth and a moulded coping. It has a prominent band with a slot flanked by the words "POST" and "OFFICE". A moulded cornice sits above this band, and the top is a leaf-decorated low ogee design with a bud finial. Below the frame is a VR monogram and a list of collection times. The founder's name is inscribed on the plinth but is obscured by thick paint.
