Description
St. Mary's Well is a well and bathing place located on the north side of The Grove in Jesmond, Newcastle upon Tyne. It is possibly from the late 17th century, with a bathing place added in the 18th century and restored in the 19th century. The structure is made of sandstone, with some coursed and squared sections and some blocks that are ashlar-dressed. There are steps leading down to a nearly rectangular bathing area, with walls varying in height from 2 to 7 courses. On the north side, there is an elliptical-headed opening featuring a stone lintel with the word "GRATIA" carved in irregular letters, and a round ashlar well situated behind the arch. An iron hinge-pin is located in the wall to the right.
