Description
The Chapel of St Mary is a Grade II* listed building located on Reid Park Road in Newcastle upon Tyne. It dates from the first half of the 12th century, with alterations made in the early 14th century and a mid-14th century addition of a sacristy. The chapel comprises a nave, chancel, and north sacristy, constructed from coursed squared sandstone. Currently, the building is roofless, with only fragments of the east end of the nave remaining.
The chancel arch features shafts with cushion capitals, one of which has scroll carving on the south side, along with some voussoirs that display roll and zig-zag mouldings. In the south chancel wall, there is a 2-light opening with cusped tracery, and the north sacristy wall contains two cusped ogee-headed lights within a square-headed opening. A north door is present in the sacristy. Inside, there are piscinae located in the south wall of the chancel and the east wall of the sacristy. The walls of the chapel stand up to about 4 meters high.
